Hello and welcome! I'm Ashwin Thota, a proven leader in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Analytics. With a dynamic career focused on leveraging data to drive business decision-making, I am passionate about harnessing the power of technology to make a significant impact.

My professional journey has been characterized by a strong technical background, strategic problem-solving skills, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As a technical leader, I have had the privilege of guiding talented teams, always emphasizing a culture of innovation and adaptability.

Currently, I serve as the Director of Data Science at USAA, where I lead a team of exceptional data scientists in developing and deploying AI and analytics solutions. These solutions enhance business performance and improve the lives of our members. My role involves not only technical leadership but also fostering a collaborative environment that champions diversity and inclusion.

I am also an active speaker at industry events and have published numerous articles on AI and analytics in the tech industry. My commitment to mentoring has allowed me to support and guide many aspiring data scientists and engineers. I believe in empowering others and contributing to a more inclusive tech community.

The Rough Side of the Coin:

Every promotional opportunity came with more responsibilities. I often felt enslaved to my job, having to comply with every directive from my manager. Changing jobs when you are on an H1-B visa is no joke. The inability to easily switch jobs if I was unhappy added to the frustration.

Finding a job posting without the common disclaimers stating "We are not able to sponsor H1B" was my first hurdle—this filtered out more than 50% of available jobs. Clearing interviews was the next challenge, followed by explaining the complexities of H1B, PERM, and I-140 sponsorship to HR personnel unfamiliar with these processes. This was a 2-4 month ordeal every time I had to switch roles.

H1B visa holders awaiting their green cards often face a dilemma regarding promotions. I know numerous friends who rejected promotions, fearing their priority date might become current soon. I experienced this mental agony multiple times, having to choose between higher pay and the possibility of imminent green card approval.

Traveling on an H1B visa is another struggle. From spending thousands on premium processing to renew visas to dealing with the anxiety of potential visa denials, every trip comes with significant stress and financial burden. I remember an instance where I had to create a presentation for my VP to explain this whole process.
